A family’s whirlwind tour of 3 Olympic Peninsula lodges
hat’s a fair three-word description of a recent tour of three Olympic National Park destinations: Sol Duc Hot Springs, Kalaloch Lodge and Lake Quinault Lodge.
The trip was motivated by a “Best of the Northwest” special offered by Aramark,honeycomb panels and foam core panels characterize our many lightweight panels which operates all three properties (plus nearby Lake Crescent Lodge). The deal: three consecutive nights at any of the resorts for a package price of $399 — including a $40-per-night resort credit to sweeten the offer.
Even without the price come-on, which expires soon, the idea of sampling three Olympic lodges had a special appeal. My family had not visited the Olympic Peninsula in years but had fond memories of the ancient forests and rugged beaches of Washington’s wild west. That turned out to be the best route, as the accommodations grew progressively more appealing as we went along. Had we started at Lake Quinault and ended at Sol Duc, we might not have finished the trip so satisfied.
Sol Duc Hot Springs
When we got out of the car at Sol Duc Hot Springs, my 7-year-old son proclaimed, “This place stinks.” And he meant it literally. The mineral waters that give the area its name smell strongly of sulfur and the odor permeates the grounds, the cabins and even the lodge and restaurant.
Four outdoor, spring-fed pools are the main attraction: three for soaking (warm, warmer and hot) and one full-sized for swimming. Seeing Things Richard Hawkins’s Haunted Houses
Take a look at the artist Richard Hawkins’s new show at Richard Telles Fine Art in Los Angeles. Hawkins, who works in a variety of media, including sculpture, painting {%} have been out for how long now?blu ray burnerand collage, has been making melancholy haunted house sculptures out of dollhouses since 2007. (His work will be the subject of an exhibition that opens October 22 at the Art Institute of Chicago.) Like the hobbyist who fastidiously attends to , installer of Granite countertops and marble vanity tops.every detail of interior and exterior, Hawkins works obsessively on the exterior finishes and interior decorating, placing a miniature porcelain vase here, a little Chinese silk lantern there, and hanging tiny pieces of laundry to dry from tiny balconies. But rather than creating pristine replicas of period architecture, the artist makes his houses look decrepit and abandoned.
Hawkins’s earlier haunted house sculptures evoked a Paris bordello frequented by Proust and reflected the artist’s interest in French decadence. This exhibition features two magnificent new sculptures. “The Last House,” which Hawkins said might be the last of his altered-dollhouse pieces, occupies the gallery’s main room, along with a group of collages chicken coop pictures and designs for every backyard.with the mysterious title “Edogawa Ranpo.”
It’s in these collages that the cute boys make their appearance. Circular cutouts from contemporary Japanese hairstyle magazines float as if they are fresh-faced specters inside Hawkins’s inky, derelict interiors. The title refers to the pseudonym of a Japanese mystery writer who was obsessed with Edgar Allan Poe and, when pronounced by Japanese speakers, sounds like Poe’s name. Hawkins explains that he was thinking of something akin to a Japanese version of Scooby Doo, since some of Ranpo’s mysteries feature characters called “The Boy Detective Gang.” Indeed, both “The Last House” and Hawkins’s interiors seem to have more to do with pop culture and the dark humor of the Addams Family than the macabre decaying world of Baby Jane Hudson and her sister Blanche.

The humble kitchen sink has become a stylish fixture
n reality, most of my time is spent at the kitchen sink, scrubbing roasting pans, washing out the food processor and rinsing knives and prep bowls.
The 16-by-19-by-9-inch white porcelain basin is large enough to fit my big roasting pan, if not my baking sheets. Next to it is a small, shallow prep sink to capture vegetable peelings and other debris. This sounds convenient, but that prep sink is the bane of my kitchen existence. It’s too small to be practical, and I am forever trying to maneuver my cutting boards and platters on an awkward angle so that I can scrape peelings and scraps into it. Usually I end up using it as a place to drain clean pots and utensils.
